No. 14 Tigers Travel to Wintry Wichita State Looking for 9th-Straight Win
Feb 15, 2025 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 14 Memphis Tigers put their winning streak on the line Sunday morning with an American Athletic Conference trip to Wichita State. Game time is set for 11 a.m. on ESPN inside Charles Koch Arena.
On the strength of Thursday's 80-65 road win at South Florida that gave head coach Penny Hardaway win No. 150 for his career, the Tigers will carry an 8-game win streak and a full head of steam into Sunday's showdown at The Roundhouse. Memphis (21-4) currently sits two games clear at the top of The American at 11-1.
It's the best start in league play for Memphis since joining the AAC, and its best overall start to a conference season since 2012-13 when the Tigers finished 16-0 in
their final year as a Conference USA member.
Sunday's contest will be a homecoming for Tiger sharpshooter Colby Rogers after spending the previous two seasons with Wichita State before transferring to Memphis in the summer. He led the Shockers in scoring (16.4) in 2023-24, while also breaking the single-season school record with 99 made three-pointers.
The Shockers (14-10, 4-7) have been on somewhat of a heater as of late, winning their last three games after starting league play 1-7 through January. They picked up back-to-back road wins at Charlotte (66-58) and South Florida (75-70), before taking down UTSA (69-64) at home earlier this week.
The Shockers are 9-4 at home this season.
Wichita State will be looking for its first win over a ranked opponent since Feb. 18, 2021 against No. 6 Houston; The Shockers have lost 10-straight to ranked foes since.
Memphis leads the all-time series with Wichita State, 21-13, after taking nine of the last 10 matchups, including a 61-53 victory last month at FedExForum (Jan. 23).
PJ Haggerty (22 points, five rebounds, four assists, four steals) and Tyrese Hunter (16 points, four steals, three rebounds) led the then No. 24 Tigers in a win where Memphis needed to overcome an eight-point deficit and trailed for more than 23 minutes.
Four Shockers are putting up double digits this season, led by Xavier Bell's 14.6 points per game on 43.0 percent shooting overall and a 37.9 percent clip from 3-point range.
