Tigers Overwhelmed in Second Half, Fall at North Texas

DENTON, Texas – Memphis women's basketball fell on the road at North Texas on Wednesday evening inside the Super Pit, dropping the contest, 97-57.
The Tigers (6-17, 4-8 AAC) opened the game on a heater but were overpowered by one of the conference's best defenses as the game waned on. Tilly Boler had a team-high 14 points, and DeeDee Hagemann had six points, seven assists and four rebounds.
Memphis opened red-hot from the field, making seven of its first 11 attempts, including three of four three-point attempts to spring into a 17-6 lead. The Mean Green (18-10, 10-3 AAC) cut their deficit from 11 to four late in the first period before a Raven Sims and-one layup and two Tamya Smith free throws gave the Tigers a 24-17 first-quarter advantage.
After the offensive onslaught in the first quarter, the Memphis offense cooled off scoring just 12 as North Texas continued to claw back into the game. With the hosts in the bonus for over three minutes in the frame, they scored seven points on 10 trips to the charity stripe. The Mean Green scored 24 of 34 first-half points in the paint as Memphis held a two-point advantage at the break.
North Texas opened the third quarter on a 12-0 run to take their first lead early in the quarter, and the Tiger deficit only expanded as the quarter drew on. The Mean Green finished the period with 32 points, the most in one quarter since the season opener (33). The final quarter was also dominated by the hosts, who were fouled 13 times to the Tigers' six in the second half as the lead got up to 40 in the game's final seconds.
North Texas shot 23 free throws to Memphis' nine and won the turnover battle, 20-6. Desiree Wooten and Tommisha Lampkin combined for 57 points on 28 field goal attempts, carrying the offensive load for the Mean Green.
The Tigers will head south to San Antonio to take on UTSA this Saturday, Feb. 15, at 2:00 p.m.
