Tigers Falter Late, Lose at Charlotte
Dec 31, 2025 | Women's Basketball
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Memphis women's basketball dropped the opening conference game of the season on Wednesday afternoon, falling at Charlotte, 62-49.
The Tigers (6-8) held a one-point lead at halftime and went back and forth with the hosts in the second half, but a fourth-quarter drought saw the 49ers (7-7) run away with the victory. Four Tigers had eight or nine points, but no one eclipsed double digits in their lowest-scoring output of the season.
Charlotte jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before the Memphis defense shut off their water, as they scored just 22 points in the first half. Six consecutive field goals from Memphis berthed their first lead of the game and reached as high as six before a late Charlotte run made it 23-22 heading into the break.
Both offenses kicked into rhythm relative to their sedated starts; the 49ers matched their 22-point tally in the third quarter alone. 12 points from Chaé Harris and Tamya Smith helped the Tigers to their highest-scoring quarter of 19.
Cori Allen connected on a midrange jumper to snap a four-minute drought with seven minutes remaining in the game to cut the Tigers' deficit to two, but it was as close as they would get as they scored just seven points in the final stanza as Charlotte pulled away.
Princess Anderson did the heavy lifting offensively for the hosts, scoring 28 points behind two threes. One of the best offensive rebounding teams in the country, the 49ers again dominated the glass. Janavia Gage and Asianae Nicholson combined for 29 rebounds, 11 of which came off of Charlotte misses as they reached 62 points despite shooting just 34.8% from the field.
Memphis will head east to Greenville to take on East Carolina on Saturday, January 3, at 1 p.m. CT.
