GREENVILLE, N.C. – No. 6 Memphis women's soccer picked up their largest conference win since 2019 on Sunday afternoon, thumping East Carolina, 5-0.
The win, along with Charlotte and UTSA losses, secured the regular season conference championship for the third consecutive season, the 16th title in program history and eighth since 2018. Memphis (13-0-2, 7-0-1 American) will be the No. 1 seed in the American Conference tournament which starts on November 3 in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
The Tigers scored in the third minute through Ashley Henderson, who scored another in the second half. Ally Casey, Flavie Dubé and Mihiro Furuya each recorded goals as Memphis improved their unbeaten conference streak to 27 games.
"Very pleased with today; I would definitely call it a 90-minute performance," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "We knew the opposition was going to bring a lot of energy on their senior day, and we challenged the girls to match it for the whole game. It was nice to see us hold momentum for most of the game outside a few moments in the second half."
In their second morning start of the season (11:00 a.m. CT), the Tigers again started strong and were rewarded with an early goal. Yuna Nagata's long pass escaped the control of the East Carolina defender, and Elise Perron capitalized with a low cross that Henderson tapped in for the opener.
Averaging six corner kicks per game, Memphis was finally able to turn one into a goal when Casey belted a loose ball into the roof of the net for the defender's first goal of the season. On the cusp of halftime, a Natalie Leibel shot deflected off the crossbar and into Dubé's path to make it 3-0 in the 43rd minute.
The visitors remained on the front foot for the majority of the second half, and it led to Henderson getting on the end of an Alex Mackay cross for the fourth brace of her career. Furuya would create her first college goal in the 84th minute, making defenders miss before burying it into the bottom corner.
Memphis will be back on the road this Thursday, October 23, to take on UTSA at 7:00 p.m.
