Tigers Drop Both Games on Day One of Saluki Bash

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The University of Memphis Volleyball team drop both games Friday at the Saluki Bash.
The Memphis Tigers (2-3) fell 3-1 against the Eastern Illinois Panthers (2-1). Madison Rice-Locket led the team with nine kills. Freshman Tiffany Snook and grad student Clara Bednarek both tallied a season-high of six kills.
The first set started close, as the Tigers were able to come from behind to tie the set 10-10. The Panthers went on a 5-0 run to push ahead 15-10. Memphis was unable to come back dropping the first set 21-25. Eastern Illinois jumped out to an early lead in the second set going up 13-4. The Panthers maintained control winning the second set 25-11. In the third set, Eastern Illinois garnered another lead going up 13-10. Memphis fought back towards the end to tie it 22-22. The Tigers pushed through to win the set 27-25. In the fourth set, the Panthers went up early leading 15-8. Eastern Illinois finished off the set, winning 25-17.
In the day's second match against the Southern Illinois Salukis (4-1), the Tigers drop a hard-fought five-set thriller (19-25, 26-28, 25-20, 25-20, 14-16). As a team, Memphis had 64 kills led by Bednarek with 14 kills. Tiffany Snook kept her big day going with 13 kills while Hannah Jones contributed 12 kills.
Jordan Heatherly tallied 44 assists along with a game-high 22 digs and six kills.
The Tigers found themselves down 0-2 but came back to win the next two sets. Memphis made their presence felt early in the third set going up 11-5. The Tigers went on a 7-2 run, pushing on to win 25-20. In the fourth, both teams went back and forth until the Tigers went on an 8-3 run to extend their lead. Memphis ended the set on a 6-1 run to send the match to a fifth set. In the fifth set, Memphis dominated the beginning going up 7-3. Southern Illinois went on a 6-2 run to bring themselves within one point. The Salukis carried that momentum to win the fifth set 16-14.
The Tigers will close out the Saluki Bash in Carbondale, Illinois tomorrow at 11 a.m. against Jackson State.
