
Tigers Drop Both Games on Final Day of Webb-Burbridge Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. – The University of Memphis Volleyball team dropped both games on their final day of the Webb-Burbridge Classic.
The Tigers (6-6) fell 3-1 against the Prairie View A&M Panthers (2-9). Hannah Jones led the team with 16 kills while Clara Bednarek followed behind with seven kills and Tabytha Toelke tallied six.
Prairie View jumped out the gate, scoring six straight points to go up 6-1. Memphis fought back with a run of their own to come within one point. The Panthers maintained a three-point lead for most of the set until the Tigers pushed through to tie the score 20-20. Prairie View was able to close it out at the end winning the opening set 26-24.
The Panthers opened the second set, ahead 6-2. They extended their lead with a 6-1 run, putting them up 12-4. Memphis rallied back to come within two points, down 16-14. Prairie View responded, pushing it back out to a five-point difference. The Tigers kept their eye on the prize, coming from behind to win the second set 26-24.
Memphis found themselves in a hole to start the set once again, down 8-4. However, the Tigers stormed back with a 6-0 run to grab the lead at 10-8. Prairie View did not back down, responding with a 9-2 run putting them ahead 17-12. The Panthers controlled the rest of the set, winning 25-21.
The Tigers started the set with a 9-6 lead, and with kills from Jones and Madison Rice-Locket, Memphis garnered a six-point advantage. Prairie View went on a 6-1 run to come back within one point. Both teams fought back and forth, however, the Panthers came out on top with a 28-26 victory.
Memphis fell 3-0 to the Arizona State Sun Devils (10-1) in their second match of the day. Jones, Bednarek, and Toelke led the Tigers again in kills, each with six.
Arizona State took an early lead, going up 10-5. Memphis was unable to make up the deficit, only coming within three points the entire set. The Tigers ended the set on a 5-2 run, ultimately dropping the first set 25-19.
The Tigers battled hard in the second frame, keeping the score close through the beginning of the set. Memphis came within one point at 14-15, however, Arizona State took off on a 5-1 run to extend their lead to five points. The Sun Devils closed out the set, winning 25-19.
Arizona State controlled the third set from the start, establishing an early lead of 12-3. Memphis was unable to come back dropping the final set 25-9.

The Tigers will be back at home at the Larry O. Finch Center on Wednesday to open up conference play against Wichita State at 6 p.m.
