No. 11/15 Tigers, UAB Play to a Scoreless Draw
Sep 19, 2024 | Women's Soccer
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Memphis women's soccer team's first conference match against UAB ended in a stalemate on Thursday night, with the teams batting to a 0-0 draw at PNC Field.
The Tigers (5-1-1, 0-0-1 AAC) played with 10 for over an hour, nonetheless managing to create plenty of attacks but failed to find the back of the net for the second consecutive match after scoring multiple goals in all of their opening five matches.
"Tonight was a lesson that one mistake can ruin an entire night's work, and that can not happen," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "I am proud of the effort that the girls showed to stay in the match, but we have to do better at keeping ourselves out of those positions."
The Blazers (4-2-2, 0-0-1 AAC) entered the game with three consecutive victories and started the game with confidence, pressing the Tigers and earning a pair of set pieces. Memphis weathered the storm and was able to pass horizontally to create attacking chances up the pitch.
The biggest first-half chance for either team came in the 22nd minute when Maddie Eskin sent a beautiful cross in the air that found the head of Ashley Henderson, who sent it flying just over the top of the crossbar.
The game script was altered in the 34th minute when Henderson received a red card for ending an altercation with a shove, leaving the Tigers to finish the match with 10 players. Finley Lavin was also booked for a foul in transition as Memphis was forced to see the game to halftime. The Blazers had three players also booked.
UAB opened the second half with a great chance to break through, but Jette Zimmer shot the ball off of her own hand to award the Tigers a free kick. Kaylie Bierman made a diving save off a deflected clearance to keep the game level.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Memphis maintained a foothold in the game, mainly off counterattacks from winning the ball off the Blazers. Alex Mackay made an impact off the bench, turning a UAB misplay into a shot headed for the top corner before it was punched wide by goalkeeper Anika Toth.
Defenders Camber Hayes and Izzy Monck put in exceptional shifts, winning their one-on-one battles and springing forward in attack. The clean sheet marks the third of the season for Bierman and the Tiger defense, who only allowed four shots.
Memphis will return to action next Thursday when they host UTSA at the Track and Soccer Stadium. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. and be broadcast on ESPN+.
