Tigers Down Lions in Straight Sets

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis Volleyball team opened the Bluff City Showdown cruising by Arkansas Pine-Bluff.
The Tigers (4-3) downed the Lions (0-8) in a 3-0 sweep where Hannah Jones led the team with nine kills. Tiffany Snook and Clara Bednarek both recorded six kills each. Tabytha Toelke contributed five kills and had the team's highest hitting percentage with .714.
Snook also tallied two blocks and was named the Huey's Player of the Game.
Jordan Heatherly had a game-high 27 assists while adding five digs, and two service aces.
After the match started in a close battle being tied 10-10, the Tigers went on an 8-2 run led by kills from Jones, Heatherly, and Madison Rice-Locket to go up 20-13. Memphis won seven of the last nine points, ending with a Jones kill to win the opening set 25-15.
Memphis dominated the second set from the beginning jumping out to a 5-10 lead. Rice-Locket extended the lead with back-to-back aces. The Tigers never looked back going on to win the set 25-12. In this set alone, Memphis had five of their 11 service aces.
In the third set, Memphis was able to pull ahead with two aces by Courtney Nix to go up 7-3. Both teams traded points back and forth, but due to the Tigers' nice cushion, UAPB never got within six points. At the end of the set, the Lions went on a 6-2 run of their own, however, Memphis put it away getting the victory 25-21.

The Tigers will be back at the Larry O. Finch Center tomorrow night at 7 p.m. to play against Lamar.
