MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis track and field is sending 14 entries to the NCAA East Regional first-round site in Lexington, Kentucky, next week Wednesday, May 22 through Saturday, May 25.
"I'm very proud of each and every one of these athletes that have managed to advance to the first round of the NCAA Championships," head coach Kevin Robinson said. "One of the most exciting things to me about this group is the youth. We have very few seniors in this group. I'm also very pleased to see athletes from almost every event group representing the program and the university. While this is not the most athletes we have ever placed, it's still a very formidable group with lots of competitive tenacity and it should be fun."
The group of entries is led by sophomore thrower Sascha Salesius Schmidt (men's shot put, discus) who qualified in a pair of events, including shot put where he enters seeded 10th in the region. Additionally, Will Dibo (men's discus, shot put) and Kyndia Matlock (women's 100m, 200m) will each compete in a pair of events.
Pole vaulter Arina Razina leads the way as the highest-seeded qualifier on the women's side, qualifying as the No. 18 seed in the East Region. Jadaja Baxter (women's long jump) qualified with the 23rd best mark, Poorna Raorane (women's shot put) qualified as the No. 25 seed and Gizel Clayton (women's 100m hurdles) qualified 25th fastest in the East Region. Teammate Madison Fleming also qualified in the women's 100-meter hurdles as the No. 32 seed.
Men's high jumper Lewis LaGrant will jump in Lexington after making it in as the No. 29 seed. Julia Konigshofer qualified in the women's javelin as the 32nd seed.
Iason Machairas and Dibo along with Salesius Schmidt make it three Tigers who qualified in the men's shot put, and those three will kick off competition for the Tigers Wednesday, May 22 at 5:30 p.m. CT.
