Apr 19, 2024 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – The top-seeded Memphis men's tennis team opened the American Athletic Conference championship Friday with a 4-1 victory over No. 8 South Florida at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Memphis advances to Saturday's semifinal where it will battle No. 4 Rice. The teams will take the court at noon.
"We are happy for a win today," Memphis assistant coach Eduardo Mena said. "The boys came out swinging in doubles and had two good wins at No. 1 and No. 3. After winning the doubles point, we had to take care of business in singles and the boys responded very well.
"We took four first sets after a couple of big battles on courts three, five and six. Then Maxime, Moritz and Pau finished off their seconds sets to get the win. We are ready for the semifinals and excited for tomorrow."
The 32nd-ranked Tigers improved to 17-5 overall on the season, while the loss ends the Bulls season at 10-17.
The Tigers opened the match with a dominant showing in doubles to grab the first point of the afternoon.
Pau Fanlo and Juan Zabala teamed up for a 6-2 victory on court three before the 34th-ranked pairing of Pablo Alemany and Charlie Barry defeated 36th-ranked Erik Grevelius and Alvin Tudorica, 6-3, from the top spot to secure the point.
Conor Gannon and Harry Rock had their match go unfinished while leading Agustin Cuellar and Ben Hudson, 5-3, on court two.
Singles play opened with Maxime Dubouch pushing his singles record to 12-1 on the year after sweeping Cuellar, 6-4, 6-1, at the fifth spot. Moritz Kudernatsch pushed the match's outcome to the brink with a 6-4, 6-3 victory from the bottom of the lineup.
South Florida grabbed a point back from court one as No. 71 Tudorica took down No. 58 Alemany in straight sets.
With the potential clinch coming from either Rock or Fanlo, it was the latter who closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Elijah Cham at the No. 4 spot to send the Tigers to the semifinals for the third year in a row.
Gannon was left unfinished on court two (1-6, 6-6) and Rock was unfinished on court three (6-4, 5-2).
