Figgins Takes Down 10,000m Record, Tigers Wrap Busy Weekend of Competition

MEMPHIS, Ten. – The University of Memphis track and field team had a busy weekend of competition as they competed at the 96th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, the Joey Haines Invite in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and the Wash. U Distance Carnival in St. Louis, Missouri.
"I thought we had a better weekend overall as a team," head coach Kevin Robinson said. "We still have a lot of work to do and things to clean up. But overall, I feel we responded and competed."
A highlight of the weekend was distance runner Chloe Figgins taking down the program record in the women's 10,000 meters at the Wash. U Distance Carnival, breaking former Tiger Arnica Zitting's record from 2018 by over two seconds.
"Chloe ran a strong race, and I was happy to see her take down the record," Robinson added. "She has been through a lot and it's great to see her perseverance shine through."
NOTABLES – Texas Relays
• Gizel Clayton ran a season-best time of 13.59 (+3.1 m/s) in the women's 100-meter hurdles. She finished 19th overall in the first round and moved to No. 1 in the American Athletic Conference.
• Women's 100-meter runner Kyndia Matlock finished 21st overall in the first round and ran a season-best time of 11.74 (+4.1 m/s).
• Adam Yakobi ran a huge season best of 53.37 in the men's 400-meter hurdles. He finished 27th overall in the first round. That time moved him to No. 3 in the AAC and No. 8 in the NCAA South Region.
NOTABLES – Wash. U Distance Carnival
• Chloe Figgins (35:24.18) finished ninth overall and shaved almost 10-full seconds off her lifetime best in the women's 10,000 meters to take down the program record by over two seconds.
• Also in the women's 10,000 meters, Ann Marie Braese and Jalyssa Smith finished third and fourth, respectively, in timed final No. 1 in St. Louis in a field of 51 women.
• In the men's 3,000-meter Steeplechase, Liam Walsh ran sub-9:00 in the steeplechase for the first time in his career to finish runner up in 8:58.21. His time ranks No. 27 in the NCAA and second in the AAC this season.
NOTABLES – Joey Haines Invite
• In the women's pole vault, Arina Razina jumped her way to first place with a clearance of 3.80 meters. Joycelyn Crum hit a huge personal best as well to finish runner up with a clearance of 3.80m.
• Will Dibo won the men's discus throw with a season-best mark of 54.36 meters. Sascha Salesius Schmidt also threw a season-best mark of 52.58 meters to finish fourth and Jamal Mitchell placed sixth throwing 50.16 meters. Eighth place went to Mans Roos after he threw a season-best of 48.55 meters.
• Issac Sawyer jumped 6.93 meters for a new season best to take third place in the men's long jump.
• Women's javelin thrower Julia Konigshofer had another strong performance and recorded another personal best. Konigshofer threw 45.52 meters and finished runner up.
• Salesius Schmidt's shot put throw of 18.24 meters put him atop the AAC and No. 21 in the NCAA for the time being. Iason Machairas threw the shot 17.27 meters to record a new personal best and finish fourth. Mans Roos took seventh place with a throw of 15.37 meters.
