Kippy Brown to Release the Tigers this Saturday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Former Memphis quarterback Kippy Brown will be the Release the Tigers nominee presented by Dillard Door & Entrance Control for Saturday's Homecoming game against Charlotte at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
"The University of Memphis is excited to welcome back a pioneer and trailblazer in Kippy Brown to 'Release the Tigers' for Homecoming," said University of Memphis Senior Vice President and Director of Athletics, Ed Scott, Ph.D. "As the first African American quarterback to start for the Tigers, it is an honor to recognize Kippy for his tremendous accomplishments while at Memphis. We would like to thank Kippy and his family for coming back home and igniting our fans at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium by releasing the Tigers!"
Brown played for the Tigers from 1974-77 and was the first black quarterback for Memphis. In his first season as a starter, he led the Tigers to an upset over seventh ranked Auburn (31-20) and a 7-4 overall record. During his tenure in the 901, Brown and the Tigers never had a losing season.
Following a successfully college career, Brown went on to coach at Memphis (State), Louisville, Tennessee and in the NFL at New York (Jets), Tampa Bay, Miami, Green Bay, Houston, Detroit, Tennessee and won the 2014 Super Bowl with Seattle.
During his notable coaching career, Brown coached players that included Dan Marino, Andre Johnson, Calvin "Megatron Johnson, Golden Tate, Doug Baldwin, Jermain Kearse and Marshawn Lynch.
Originally from Sweetwater, Tenn., Brown played and led Sweetwater High School to two state championships.
Brown was honored with the Billy J. Murphy Award and inducted into the M Club Hall of Fame in 2016 and the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.
The Tigers (6-1, 2-1 AAC) are back at home on Saturday, Oct. 26 to host Charlotte (3-4, 2-1 AAC) for Homecoming at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium with kick scheduled for 11 a.m. CT on ESPNU. $11 tickets are available to the Charlotte game to celebrate 11-consecutive years of bowl eligibility for the Tigers.
