Oct 14, 2024 | Football
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis redshirt-junior linebacker Chandler Martin was named the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.
The captain of the Tiger defense, Martin, totaled seven tackles (five solo) to lead the team while recording a sack for the fourth-consecutive game in a 21-3 win over South Florida in Orlando on Saturday. He added a quarterback hurry, a pass breakup and recovered a fumble for the second touchdown of his career in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach for the Bulls.
Martin has been the anchor of a much-improved Memphis defense this season that held South Florida to 258 total yards in the road win. The Tigers' run defense was especially stingy, holding the Bulls to just 24 yards on the ground on 19 attempts while forcing three takeaways (2 fumbles, 1 INT).
It marks the second-career AAC Defensive Player of the Week honor for the Lithonia, Georgia, native who leads The American with 4.0 sacks, 9.0 tackles for loss and three fumble recoveries in 2024. His three fumble recoveries are also good for the national lead while his nine tackles for loss rank 12th in the country.
As a unit, the Tiger defense ranks No. 7 nationally in turnover margin (+8), No. 12 in turnovers gained (12) and third-down conversion defense (.297), No. 13 in scoring defense (15.8 avg.), No. 18 with 42.0 tackles for loss and No. 21 in both total defense (301.7) and rushing defense (103.2).
The Tigers are back at home on Saturday, Oct. 19 to host North Texas (5-1, 2-0 AAC) at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium with kick scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU. Single-game tickets for the 2024 season can be found at THIS LINK.
