Fast Tiger Start Not Enough to Down Shockers

WICHITA, Kan. – Looking to build off the win over Temple, the University of Memphis women's basketball team made the trip to Kansas to take on Wichita State. While the Tigers got off to a fast start, the Shockers used a dominant second quarter to take the 71-66 final.
Following tonight's game, Memphis moves to 5-12 overall and 1-5 in AAC play.
A hot start from the floor put Memphis up early; Ki'Ari Cain started the game with a deep three-pointer from the near wing before Madison Griggs and Shelbee Brown added in baskets to put the Tigers up 7-3 less than three minutes into the game.
A 9-2 run midway through the quarter gave Memphis a commanding nine-point lead after Hannah Riddick sank consecutive free throws. Riddick added in a completed and-one at the end of the frame to take the 25-17 lead into the second quarter.
Wichita State strung together an 18-2 run midway into the second quarter to take a 39-31 lead with just under three minutes remaining in the half. The Shockers would end up taking the 41-33 advantage into the halftime break.
Shelbee Brown went off in the third for the Tigers, scoring nine of her career-high 15 points to get Memphis within six of the Shockers with 2:24 remaining in the quarter. Wichita State ended the frame with back-to-back buckets to take 61-52 lead into the final 10 minutes of the game.
Memphis cut the WSU lead to as little as three in the final minutes of the game; Riddick strung together a 6-0 run by herself to make it a 69-66 game. Despite cutting the disadvantage and the Tiger defense holding Wichita State to no field goals for nearly five minutes in the fourth quarter, the Shockers got free throws Salese Blow and Tre'zure Jobe in the final seconds of the game to secure the 71-66 final.
Hannah Riddick had a game-high 19 points on 7-12 from the field while Shelbee Brown scored a career-high 15 points while going a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripe with nine rebounds.
Memphis will be back in action in the Bluff City on Saturday, Jan. 20 when they play host to the Owls of Florida Atlantic. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. with coverage available on ESPN+.
