#12 Tigers Head to UTSA for Thursday Night Match
Sep 20, 2023 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – It will be a battle of the champions on Thursday night as the Memphis Tiger women's soccer team, the back-to-back AAC Champions, will face-off with the reigning CUSA Champions, the Roadrunners of UTSA.
Memphis (7-1, 1-0 AAC) comes into the match on a four-game win streak that was extended on Sunday night when they took a 4-0 decision over UT Martin. Momo Nakao, Saorla Miller and Yui Suetsugu would all find the back of the net while Mya Jones assisted on two of the team's goals.
"We did some very good things against UT Martin," said head women's soccer coach Brooks Monaghan. "The thing I challenged the team to do against UT Martin was to communicate more and bring tons of energy – which they did. We also created a ton of chances for ourselves which I'm happy with; we just need to be able to finish those chances."
The Tigers, who are currently ranked 9th in the TopDrawerSoccer poll and 12th in the United Soccer Coaches poll, also find themselves ranked in the top-10 in the country in corner kicks per game, scoring offense and shots per game.
For the season, Miller currently leads the team with seven goals while Jones has 12 points recorded with three goals and six assists. The duo, who has played a part in 17 of the team's 25 goals this season, is dominating the AAC on the offensive end. Defensively, the Tigers have recorded five shutouts and two one-goal matches this season.
UTSA (5-3-2, 0-0-1 AAC) is coming off a 1-0 loss to Baylor where the Roadrunners had a hard time finishing on the offensive end. While UTSA outshot the Bears 14-11, Baylor would get a goal in the 20' off a corner kick that would serve as the eventual game-winning goal.
The Roadrunners have been led by Sophie Morrin and her three goals this season while Sabrina Hillyer has notched two goals and two assists. In goal, Mia Krusinski and Jasmine Kessler have split time between the pipes with a combined 27 saves and two shutouts, each.
"UTSA is the defending CUSA Champions so it's going to be an extremely tough match," said Monaghan. "I've known their coach for quite some time, and he does a tremendous job with that group. We've got to bring energy and passion and play our style from the start to give ourselves the best chance possible."
This will be the first ever matchup between the Tigers and Roadrunners.
Thursday's match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff with coverage available on ESPN+.
