Monaghan and Crew Ready for 2023 Season

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Following a week of two-a-day practices ranging from the early morning hours to the brutal sunshine in the afternoons, head Memphis women's soccer coach Brooks Monaghan says this team is ready for the upcoming season.
"This week has been beyond expectations," said Monaghan. "We've been going through two-a-days every day but we're going to give them a well-deserved rest day to get ready for our first exhibition match."
The Tigers, who come into the season as the back-to-back reigning American Athletic Conference Champions, will get their first look of the season when they play host to Missouri and Lipscomb next week in exhibition matches.
"Right now, we're leaning on going returner-heavy against Missouri and then seeing more of the newcomers on Wednesday. We're trying to give everyone the opportunity to showcase themselves and give the coaches a good look at what could potentially work for us."
With ten new faces on this season's roster, there is great potential ahead for the Tigers.
"The word I've been using so much this preseason is potential and at the end of the day, it's just a word if players don't do their part. But the entire class has immense talent so it's hard to pinpoint just one or two specific players, but myself and the coaching staff like what we see so far."
A few familiar faces will be back on the field this season with Grace Stordy, Saorla Miller and Mya Jones wearing the captain's armbands for Memphis. Along with the captains, Monaghan will look towards other upperclassmen to help lead the team throughout the season.
"The senior class has done a great job stepping into that leadership role. We need that experienced leadership, and this group knows what works and what doesn't, and they have done a tremendous job setting the tone early."
Memphis will face-off with Missouri, Lipscomb and UT-Martin next week before kicking off the season and home opener on Thursday, August 18 against Southern University.
