The Tigers Hit the Road as They Travel to the Toledo Invitational

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Tigers head to the Toledo Invitational for the first road matches of the 2023 season. Memphis will take on Virginia Tech, Youngstown State on Friday Sept. 1 and Toledo on Saturday Sept. 2 in the two-day four-team tournament.
Virginia Tech opened its season at home with the Hokie Invitational, going 3-0. The Hokies are hitting a .313, averaging 12.7 kills per set and 12 digs per set. Three players are hitting .400 or more on the season on 15 or more attempts: Hailey Pearce (15 K), Cara Lewis (15 K) and Sydney Petersen (17 K).
Youngstown State opened its season with the YSU Invitational, starting off strong with a 3-2 win over Canisius before falling to Belmont and Saint Francis (Pa.). The Penguins are entering the tournament hitting .209 averaging 12.7 kills per set. Four players tallied 25 or more kills: Abbie Householder (32), Kiyah Franklin (27), Elise Moeller (26) and Jazmin Vergara (25).
Toledo opened its season at the Wake Forest Invitational going 1-2 on the weekend. The Rockets beat Northeastern before falling to Wake Forest and Grand Canyon. Toledo is currently hitting .152 averaging 11.5 kills per set. Three players have tallied over 25 kills on the season: Taylor. Alt (39), Izzy Granger (27), Jada Bouyer (26).
The Tigers finished their opener weekend 2-1, after taking games against Alcorn State and Samford, and dropping the match against Miami (OH). Memphis is currently hitting a .266 averaging 11.8 kills per set. Six Tigers hit double digit kills over the weekend: Reilly Briggs (25), Clara Bednarek (21), Hannah Jones (20), Tabytha Toelke (19), Alexis Lewis (19) and Madison Rice-Locket (16). With four players hitting .349 or better, Memphis relied on multiple players through its play.
Defensively Memphis was led in digs by freshman Abigail Schlueter recording 45 on the weekend, followed by Loren Robertson with 22. Bednarek led with 12.0 blocks, seven of which were solo.
