#17 Tigers Tough Schedule Continues with Ohio State, #7 Alabama
Aug 23, 2023 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women's soccer team will continue their tough non-conference schedule this week when they host Ohio State this Thursday night before making the trip down to Tuscaloosa to take on Alabama on Sunday evening.
#17/#23 Memphis (2-0) is coming off back-to-back opening weekend wins after they shutout out Southern and Ole Miss. Saorla Miller played a big part in that, scoring three of the team's seven goals last weekend while Kaylie Bierman made five saves with 135 minutes in goal. Both Miller and Bierman were named to the AAC's Weekly Awards list as the Offensive and Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively.
"Ohio State is a top program, "said head women's soccer coach Brooks Monaghan. "I set this schedule up for a reason. They've been an NCAA Tournament team and ranked over the years so we're going to have to continue to move in the right direction and improve from game-to-game to give ourselves the best chance."
The Tigers look to keep their home winning streak alive as they host Ohio State on Thursday night. The Buckeyes (1-1) are coming off their first loss of the season after they dropped a 2-1 decision over Buffalo last Thursday.
After the Bulls tied the match at 1-1 with a goal over a minute after OSU, a shot in the 83' from Buffalo would find the back of the net to put Ohio State down. With four attempts from the Buckeyes in the final seven minutes of the match, none would get past UB's goalkeeper, and they would suffer the 2-1 loss.
Thursday's match will be the first meeting between the Tigers and Buckeyes.
#7/#8 Alabama (2-0) is coming off a dominant and historic 2022 season where the Crimson Tide went 23-3-1, a perfect 10-0 spot in SEC play and all the way to the NCAA National Semi-Finals. Their finish from last season earned them the #7 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll earlier this month.
"I've got a lot of respect to their team and what they did last year with making it to the College Cup. Alabama is a really good program, and we need to use what we take from the Ohio State game to put ourselves in the best position to win on Sunday night," said Monaghan.
It's been two seasons since Alabama and Memphis met; back in 2021, the Tigers got two late goals from Tanya Boychuk and Mya Jones to secure them the 3-1 win over the Tide and keep Memphis undefeated at 5-0-1.
Sunday's match will be the 11th overall meeting between the Tigers and Crimson Tide.
Thursday's match against Ohio State is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m. at the Track & Soccer Complex. Coverage of the match can be found on ESPN+. Sunday's game at Alabama is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start time with coverage available on SEC Network+.
