Eduardo Mena Named Men's Tennis Assistant Coach
Jul 25, 2023 | Men's Tennis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis men's tennis head coach, Chris Doerr, announced Tuesday the hiring of Eduardo Mena as the new Tigers assistant coach.
"I am pumped to be adding Eduardo as my assistant coach," Doerr said. "He has so much experience as a player and coach. His personality is exactly what we needed. He's calm and calculated with proven success in developing players.
"I have known Eduardo for some time, we are good friends and he was always my top choice to work with. I know he will do great things for the Tigers."
Mena arrives in the Bluff City after spending the last eight years at Tennessee Tech where he served roles as volunteer assistant (2018-19), graduate assistant (2019-20) and a full-time assistant (2020-21) before being promoted to associate head coach last season.
In Mena's first season of coaching, Tech claimed both the Ohio Valley Conference's regular season and tournament crown. It was the fourth-straight tourney title for the Golden Eagles and their seventh regular-season championship in a nine-year span.
Prior to joining the coaching staff, Mena compiled a storied playing career with the purple and gold from 2014-18. He is the program's all-time winningest player with 153 combined singles and doubles victories.
Mena was a 2-time OVC Player of the Year in 2016 and 2017 and claimed the league's Freshman of the Year award in 2015. He also earned First Team All-Conference honors three-straight seasons and brought home a second-team nod as a freshman.
The Bultrago del Lozoya, Spain native is the only Golden Eagle to eclipse the century mark in career singles wins, accumulating an overall record of 105-37 (.739). That is 19 more than the next closest player in school history.
Mena is the only Golden Eagle to ever see his name appear three different times on the top-10 single-season singles wins list. His 33 victories in 2015-16 are the most ever in one season of Tennessee Tech tennis. He also went undefeated in conference play in two of his four seasons as a Golden Eagle, dropping one match as a freshman and another as a senior for an overall OVC mark of 26-2 (.929).
