Bats Come to Life as Tigers Take Care of Red Wolves in Jonesboro
May 02, 2023 | Baseball
With the win, Memphis improves to 23-22 (5-10 AAC) on the season. The Red Wolves slipped to 15-26 on the year with the loss.
"We got great pitching performances and capitalized offensively with guys in scoring position," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "Brayland [Skinner] had a great day at the plate, ending a home run short of the cycle. As long as we keep moving in this direction, we're going to find ourselves in a good situation."
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Tigers got on the board early. Austin Baskin walked to set up a Logan Kohler RBI-triple – his second three-bagger of the year, putting Memphis in front of Arkansas State 1-0 in the top of the first.
• A two-run home run by ASU's Brandon Hager in a full count with two outs in the bottom of the first gave the Red Wolves a 2-1 lead.
• Memphis tied it up at 2-2 in the top of the third when Anthony Hansen drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Brayland Skinner, who hit his 11th double of the year to lead off the inning.
• A four-run fourth inning gave Memphis a 6-2 lead. With two outs, Skinner slapped his second extra-base hit of the game, a triple in the right-center field gap to set the table for Jake Curtis' two-run home run. A Baskin single extended the inning for another two-out, two-run home run off the bat of Kohler.
• In the fifth, Cameron Benson hit a solo home run to deep right field with one out in the inning. A two-out single by Curtis plated Skinner for his third RBI in the game, making it a 8-2 Memphis lead.
• The Tigers tacked on two more in the seventh on a two-run single by Baskin. The Red Wolves got to of their own in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 10-4 game.
• With the bases juiced in the eighth, Skinner got his third extra-base hit of the game with a two-run double off the top of the right-field wall, missing the cycle by inches. A sac-fly by Curtis plated Brennan DuBose to give the Tigers a 13-4 lead that proved final.
