Tigers Fall to No. 14 ECU in Game One in Greenville

May 12, 2023 | Baseball

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The University of Memphis baseball team fell 10-4 to No. 14 East Carolina on Friday night at Clark-LeClair Stadium in game one of a three-game American Athletic Conference series.

With the setback, the Tigers move to 26-23 (8-11 AAC) on the season. The Pirates snapped the Tigers' five-game winning streak and improved to 36-14 (13-6) on the year with the win and have now won five-straight games of their own.

"We started off in the hole six runs and had some opportunities where it looked like we were going to battle a little bit, but we just need to be more consistent," head coach Kerrick Jackson said. "Turn the page, we have [Dalton] Fowler going for us on the mound whose been one of our best guys all year. Hopefully we come out and play better baseball tomorrow."

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Pirates came out swinging and pushed across six runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump out to an early lead.
• Memphis responded with a run of its own in the top of the second. Will Spears doubled and Brennan DuBose drove a single back up the middle to score Spears from second to make the score 6-1.
• The Pirates added three runs in the sixth when Justin Wilcoxen homered to right field and scored another in the seventh on an RBI double by Joey Berini, extending the Pirates' lead to 10-1.
Austin Baskin slugged his ninth home run of the season in the top of the eighth inning – a two-run shot to left-center field that drove in Jake Curtis after he was hit by a pitch. Still in the eighth, Spears ripped his second double of the game and Anthony Hansen singled through the left side to cut the lead to 10-4. Ultimately, it was too little, too late for the Tigers and that score held final.

NOTABLES
• Baskin ended the game 1-for-4 with his ninth long ball of the year and drove in a pair of runs.
• Spears went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and runs scored.
• Hansen's RBI single in the eighth inning brought his season total up to 29.
• DuBose ended the game 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
