MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Head Memphis women's basketball coach Alex Simmons continues to build her team as she adds Layken Cox to the upcoming 2023-24 season roster.
Cox, a 6-1 junior forward out of Sumter, S.C., comes to Memphis after two years at Gardner-Webb, where she was an integral part of the Runnin' Bulldogs post presence. Cox would go on to post career-numbers this season where she averaged 8.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game this season while shooting just under 50% from the field. In her two seasons at GWU, Cox played in 50 games while making 29 starts, including Gardner-Webb's historic 2022-23 season where they were crowned the Big South regular season and conference champions following an 18-0 mark in league play.
"Layken and her family are natives of Tennessee which was huge when she chose to join our team. She is a versatile post player with great touch and efficiency," said Simmons. "She has worked hard to expand her game and was a pivotal part in winning a championship. Layken's growth has not gone unnoticed, and I can't wait to continue to help and watch her grow as she plays a key part in our success here at Memphis."
Cox scored in double-digit figures 13 times this past season, including a career-high 19 points at Presbyterian. She would pick up her first collegiate double-double (16 points, 15 rebounds) in the team's 74-61 win over High Point in the Big South Championship.
