MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 12-ranked University of Memphis rifle team fell to No. 8 Murray State, 4724-4687, on Wednesday afternoon at the R.F. Fogelman Rifle Range in Memphis, Tenn. The Racers (6-3) won smallbore, 2351-2320, before edging the Tigers (4-7) in air rifle, 2373-2367.
"I'm proud of how the team handled the match today," head coach Morgan Phillips said. "Everyone had their difficulties, but no one gave up and fought until the end. We learned a lot that we will take into our match against Ole Miss this weekend. A couple of highlights were personal bests for Sophie and Sam today, as well as honoring Kaylene for Senior Day."
KEY MOMENTS
• Senior Angeline Henry led the way for the Tigers on the afternoon, placing third overall with an aggregate score of 1181. Henry placed third in smallbore with a score of 589 and fifth in air rifle with a 592.
• Freshman Gabriela Zych took sixth as an individual with a total of 1172. Zych placed sixth in air rifle with a 591 and seventh in smallbore with a total of 581.
• Classmate Sophia Cruz paced Memphis in air rifle, finishing a team-best fourth with a season-best 594. Cruz placed seventh overall as an individual with an aggregate of 1171.
• Jack Kersey (8th), Kaylene Castillo (9th) and Sam Sparrow rounded out the top-10 individuals for the Tigers.
