Tigers Close Out Regular Season Against Tulane
Feb 28, 2023 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women's basketball team will close out their regular season portion of their schedule on Wednesday night when they play host to the Green Wave of Tulane University.
Memphis (18-9, 10-4 AAC) had a big week with wins over Cincinnati and SMU to move them into second place in the American Athletic Conference. One of those wins came in style as the Tigers got a 30-foot overtime buzzer beater from Madison Griggs to take the 69-68 win over SMU.
Griggs would go on to score a season-high 25 points on 7-13 shooting from long range. With the win, Memphis solidified themselves as a top-three seed in the American Athletic Conference Championship, recorded their 10th road win of the season, the most since the 1985 season, won their sixth consecutive game and gave the program their most wins in a season (18) since the 2015-16 season.
For the season, Griggs and Jamirah Shutes are leading the team in scoring with a combined 27.7 points per game while Emani Jefferson, Destiny Thomas and Hannah Riddick are dominating on the boards for the Tigers.
Tulane (17-11, 7-8 AAC) is on a hot streak after they extended their winning streak to four games after taking down ECU on Saturday afternoon. The Green Wave would hold the Pirates to just six second quarter points to take a 32-33 lead going into the half. The lead would hold for the remainder of the game as Tulane went on to take the 64-56 win.
For the season, Dynah Jones and Marta Galic lead the team with a combined 24.5 points per game while Galic and Anijah Grant are cleaning up on the boards for the Green Wave.
Last season when the two teams met, Tulane just barely came away with the 76-74 win.
A 27-point second quarter from the Green Wave would give them a lead as large as 11. But, the Memphis offense would fight back and cut their deficit to two with 44 seconds left in the game after back-to-back three pointers. But, time would expire before the Tigers could get within reaching distance of Tulane and they would suffer the 76-74 loss.
Wednesday's game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse with coverage available on ESPN+ and on 98.9 FM The Roar of Memphis with Tyler Springs on the call.
