MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The No. 11-ranked University of Memphis rifle team will head to Oxford, Miss. to compete in the team's NCAA Qualifier on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 8 a.m. CT. The team will shoot with No. 5 Ole Miss but will not be competing against the Rebels. Live targets for the match can be found at GoTigersGo.com.
"We are feeling confident going back to Ole Miss this weekend after this previous weekend," head coach Morgan Phillips said. "We were able to learn a lot and get invaluable experience heading into the qualifier. We'll look to maintain what we've been building all year in practice this week and fine tune anything we need to. I think we are in the best position we could be heading into the weekend and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do."
The top eight teams with the best average scores will qualify for the NCAA Championships. Averages are determined by each team's best three scores at different locations and their score from the NCAA Qualifier will be added to that total. The top-four individuals in both smallbore and air rifle who are not on a qualifying team will also advance to the NCAA Championships.
The NCAA will announce what teams and individuals qualified for the NCAA Championships on Monday, Feb. 20 at 3:00 p.m. Currently, the Tigers are ranked 11th for NCAA selection with an average aggregate score of 4709.33.
Last time out, the Tigers set program record scores in both air rifle (2380) and aggregate (4721) in a setback to No. 5 Ole Miss, 4725-4721. In total, Memphis has set the school record in both air rifle and aggregate twice this season and in smallbore once.
