Tigers Prep for Pre-Conference Tune Up
Feb 16, 2023 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis track and field teams are set to split squads this weekend and compete in Cape Girardeau, Mo., at the Redhawks Open as well as the Arkansas Qualifier in Fayetteville, Ark. on Friday, Feb. 17. Throwers will compete at the Redhawks Open and jumpers will head to Fayetteville.
This weekend will serve as the final tune-up before the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Championships scheduled for Feb. 24-25.
"The goal this weekend is to provide our technical field event athletes one last chance to sharpen up before the indoor championships next week," head coach Kevin Robinson said. "We have some athletes who are very close to putting some technical aspects together. Time is short. Indoor season goes by so quickly. I'm excited for one last opportunity to prepare."
Action is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. (Live Results) in Fayetteville on Friday morning and 3:30 p.m. (Live Results) in Cape Girardeau.
NOTABLES
• Graduate student Cole Riddle broke the AAC pole-vault record at the South Alabama Jaguar Invitational (Feb. 5) with a meet-winning mark of 5.64m (18'6") and was named AAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week on Feb. 7 for his performance. In addition, Riddle was named AAC Men's Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 31 for his then school-record breaking and meet-winning performance at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational. Riddle's AAC-leading clearance of 5.64m (18'6") was a lifetime personal-best vault (indoors and outdoors) and currently ranks No. 6 in the NCAA.
• Thrower Amber Simpson launched a 20.81-meter (68'3.25") throw to win the women's weight throw and move to No. 2 all-time in the event at Memphis. Her mark is second-best in the conference this season and ranks 25th nationally.
• In the 60-meter hurdles, Madison Fleming took down a 13-year-old school record with her time of 8.36 in the prelims at the PNC Lenny Lyles Invitational. Fleming finished fifth in the final with a time of 8.45, which also would have broken the record previously owned by Tayanna Simpson. Her time is currently sixth-fastest in the AAC. In addition, Simone Harper clocked an 8.45 at the Music City Challenge last weekend and ranks seventh in the AAC.
• Graduate student Alyssa Morello was named American Athletic Conference (AAC) Women's Field Athlete of the Week on Jan. 24 for her runner-up performance in the pole vault at the Vanderbilt Invitational. Morello's AAC-leading mark of 4.23m (13'10.5") was good for No. 2 in program history and currently ranks 20th in the NCAA.
• Vincent Chenier broke the Memphis 3,000-meter record with a personal-best time of 8:12.34 to finish third at the Music City Challenge. His time was nearly 14 seconds faster than his last time out on Feb. 5 at the South Alabama Jaguar Invitational and nearly seven seconds faster than his previous personal-best time.
