MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After a thrilling American Athletic Conference Championship Quarterfinal win over South Florida in Memphis on Sunday, the fourth-seeded University of Memphis men's soccer team will travel to Dallas, Texas, for a matchup with third-ranked and No. 1 seed SMU in the AAC Championship Semifinals on Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with coverage available on ESPN+.
Memphis (10-4-2, 4-4 AAC) won its 10th game of the season for the first time since 2019 with a thrilling 3-2 win over South Florida on Sunday in the quarterfinal round of the AAC Tournament. The Tigers scored on a header from Alberto Cruz in the 15th minute and evened the score at 2-2 with just under five minutes to play on an attempt by Jose Maria Ojeda that was deflected off a USF defender for a goal. Memphis got the match-winning goal in the 89th minute with a corner kick off the foot of Hayden Anderson that found Logan Longo streaking in for a header that he sent into the top-right corner of the net.
Longo and Cruz both notched their third goal of the season in the win, respectively. The duo rank tied for second on the squad behind only Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos (12), who has booted an impressive seven game-winning strikes.
"We are excited to be able to compete for a conference championship this week in Dallas," head coach Richard Mulrooney. "The squad has worked hard for this opportunity, and we are hoping to put our best foot forward against a very talented SMU team."
SMU (12-1-2, 7-0-1 AAC) is riding a four-game winning streak and is coming off a 2-1 win over AAC foe Temple on Nov. 1 where it secured the outright regular-season AAC Championship and locked up the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament.
Then-ranked No. 16 SMU handed the Tigers their first loss of the season in Dallas back on Sept. 15, 2-1, in the conference opener for both teams. Rodrigues dos Santos netted the lone goal for the Tigers on a free kick in the loss.
