MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's basketball team is back in action Friday night when the Alabama State Hornets come to town. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at FedExForum and will be streamed on ESPN+.
This is the only the second meeting ever between the two programs. Alabama State visited the Bluff City last season for Memphis' non-conference finale when the Tigers earned an 83-61 victory on Dec. 21.
DeAndre Williams shot 11-of-14 from the floor in the win and scored 25 points to go along with a double-double from Kendric Davis (14 points and 12 assists). Jayden Hardaway nor Malcolm Dandridge played in the game.
Memphis (2-0) is coming off a pair of wins in the opening week of the 2023-24 season. The Tigers defeated Jackson State, 94-77, in the season opener before going on the road to earn a 70-55 victory over Missouri last Friday night.
In the two games, the Tigers have averaged 82.0 points and shot 46.9-percent from the field and 37.5-percent from three-point range.
Alabama State enters the game 1-2 on the year, after defeating Oglethorpe 115-51 Tuesday in its home opener.
The Hornets are coached by former Memphis Tiger standout and assistant coach, Tony Madlock.
Madlock (1998-92) made up the backcourt with Penny Hardaway when the Tigers reached the Elite Eight in 1992.
He was a member of four postseason teams for Memphis, two NCAA Tournaments, two NIT's and spent three seasons as an assistant coach under Hardaway from 2018-21 where he helped reel in the No. 1 recruiting class for 2019.
