#10 Tigers Take on Rice in Thursday Evening Match Up
Oct 04, 2023 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The 10th ranked Memphis Tiger women's soccer team will continue their tear this season as they take on the Owls of Rice this Thursday night.
Memphis (9-1, 3-0 AAC) is currently on a six-game winning streak after earning a 2-1 win over SMU last week. Mya Jones, who was named as the AAC's Offensive Player of the Week, scored back-to-back goals in the 11' and 14' to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead. Despite giving up a goal in the second half to the Mustangs, Memphis would come away with their sixth home win of the year.
"It was a tough game," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "I'm really pleased with things we did in the match – we started strong and got up on them early. Like any match against a quality opponent, they're going to have their moments and we're going to have ours and it was unfortunate we gave away the penalty, but at the end of the day I'm proud of the result and how the team finished the game."
For the season, Jones and Saorla Miller have been the biggest offensive threat for the Tigers, combining for 13 goals and eight assists through 10 games. Along with Jones and Miller, Momo Nakao, Anna Hauer, Yui Suetsugu, Ashley Henderson and Anne-Valerie Seto have all netted multiple goals this year.
In goal, Kaylie Bierman has been steady for Memphis, collecting seven of the team's nine wins while making 20 saves. Bierman currently boasts a 0.55 goals-against average, ranking her second in the AAC while leading the conference with a 0.833 save percentage.
Rice (2-9-1, 0-4 AAC) has struggled recently, dropping five of their last six matches. Most recently, the Owls fell to Tulsa 2-1 last week where the Golden Hurricane would net the game-winning goal in the 76' of play.
For the season, Ellen Halseth leads the team with five goals and three assists while Kallie McKinney has chipped in three goals and two assists. Between the pipes, Ann Stephanie Fortin leads the team with 29 saves in 675 minutes of work.
"We need to start the game off strong like we did last week and continue to get better each game. At the end of the day, Rice is a good opponent and they've had great success in the past and we need to focus on ourselves and being sharp," said Monaghan.
Thursday's match in Houston is set to kick-off at 7 p.m. with coverage available on ESPN+.
