Tigers Head to Charlotte for Final Regular Season Match
Oct 31, 2023 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team will wrap up its regular season slate on Wednesday night when they head to Charlotte to take on the 49er's.
"Just like the rest of the conference games we've played this year, this is the biggest game of the year," head coach Richard Mulrooneysaid. "We're obviously trying to finish as high as possible and getting these three points over Charlotte are crucial. We just need to focus on the game itself – a full 90 minutes against a good Charlotte team – to give us the best result possible."
Memphis (9-3-2, 4-3 AAC) has been on a tear recently, winning its last five matches while outscoring opponents 12-5 in the process. Last week when the Tigers hosted South Florida, Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos led the charge with both goals over the Bulls while Anders Bordoy got a touch on both strikes, earning him AAC Rookie of the Week honors.
On the defensive end, goalkeeper JD Gunn made four saves in route to his sixth win of the season.
For the season, Rodrigues dos Santos leads the team and AAC in total goals (12) while ranking in the top-10 in the country in total goals, total points (28) and game-winning goals (7).
Charlotte (9-3-1, 5-2 AAC) comes into Wednesday night's match off a 2-0 loss to 24th ranked FIU where the 49er's were held to just three shots the entire match.
For the season, Filip Jauk, Brigham Larsen and Natsuki Ogata lead the team with a combined 13 goals while Leonard Stritter has made 24 saves in 881 minutes of work.
Last season when the two teams met, Colin Welsh recorded seven stops as the Tigers took a 1-1 draw with then 13th ranked Charlotte. Alberto Cruz would find the back of the net in the 8' off assists from Jose Maria Ojeda and Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos.
Wednesday's match is scheduled to kick-off at 6 p.m. CT with coverage available on ESPN+.
