Top-Seeded Tigers Take on UAB in AAC Championship Quarterfinals
Oct 30, 2023 | Women's Soccer
LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. – The University of Memphis women's soccer team will kick-off its postseason slate on Tuesday morning when they take on the Blazers of UAB in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Championship.
"We need to come out and set the tone early," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "If we play with high intensity from the first whistle to the last and execute the fine details, we're going to give ourselves the best chance at a win."
Memphis, (15-1, 9-0 AAC) had a spectacular regular season claiming the AAC West Division while boasting an unblemished conference record for the first time in program and AAC history. The Tigers are also currently on a 12-game winning streak that is the best since the 2011 season.
The Tigers have had an abundance of scoring this year with Mya Jones and Saorla Miller leading the charge with nine and ten goals, respectively, while Anna Hauer and Momo Nakao have a combined 12 goals. While the offense soared, the Kaylie Bierman and the defense has shut down its opponents allowing just five goals all season and boasting NCAA bests in goals-against average (0.312) and shutout percentage (0.750).
Two weeks ago, when the Tigers and Blazers met, Memphis struck early getting goals from Hauer and Honoka Hamano in the 5' and 6'. Miller and Haylee Spray would add to the Tiger lead in the second half to give Memphis the 4-0 win. Along with the frequent scoring, the defense held UAB to just one shot the entire match.
Tuesday's Quarterfinal match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. CT kick-off at the Premier Sports Campus with coverage available on ESPN+. Admission is free to the public.
