Tigers Ground Owls to Extend Win Streak to Four
Oct 21, 2023 | Men's Soccer
"I'm proud of this team. We were 0-3 in conference and to now be 3-3, it shows the grit of this team," head coach Richard Mulrooney said. "Temple's record doesn't represent how good they are. They're a dangerous team on the counterattack. We were clicking well tonight to get four goals against them."
The decision improved Memphis to 8-3-2 overall on the season and 3-3 in American Athletic Conference play.
KEY MOMENTS
- Eric Primo put the Tigers on top in the 21' after he received a pass from Lineker Rodrigues dos Santos at the top of the box and fired a right-footed rocket past the keeper and just inside the left post.
- Just before the half, with only five ticks left on the clock, the Tigers sent in a corner kick that Rodrigues dos Santos got a left heel on and banged it off the crossbar. Logan Longo was there to clean up the rebound with a header into the back of the net from just three yards out to give Memphis a 2-0 lead into the break.
- Temple cut the score in half in the 58' when Tessho Kobayashi flicked a shot from 10 yards out into the side of the net.
- The Tigers extended their advantage in the 75' when the ball found the feet of Rodrigues dos Santos just in front of the frame off a long throw in from Hayden Anderson. An assist was also credited to Cesar Sancho for getting his head on the deflection.
- Just two minutes later, Bryce Meredith buried the Tigers' fourth score of the night when he curled a left-footed shot around the keeper from 10 yards out. Rodrigues dos Santos set Meredith up on the score with a long feed off the rebound from a Temple corner kick.
- The Owls netted the final tally of the night when Rocco Haeufglockner got open in the box from six yards out and pushed a shot into the left side of the goal.
- The Tigers blasted the Owls all night with a season-high 24 shot attempts, putting nine on target.
- Memphis won the corner kick battle with a season high 13 to Temple's five.
- Rodrigues dos Santos scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season, while also securing three assists.
- JD Gunn recorded two saves on the night.
- Memphis tallied a season high five assists in the win.
- The Tigers will stay in the Bluff City to match up with South Florida next Friday, Oct. 27. Kickoff for the regular season home finale is scheduled for 7 p.m. with coverage available on ESPN+.
