Men’s & Women’s Soccer Teams to Name Practice Field After Coaches Bermel, Bartels
Oct 17, 2023 | Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's and women's soccer programs will honor two former head coaches, Peter Bermeland Chris Bartels, Saturday morning with the naming of their practice field to, Bermel-Bartels Field.
"We are honored to be able to recognize them for all they did on and off the field," head men's soccer coach Richard Mulrooney said. "Coach Bermel started this program, taking it from a club team to an NCAA Division I sport. And for Coach Bartels to take that foundation and take those next steps in growing the program, including winning a championship, we wouldn't be here today if it weren't for them. They laid the foundation for this team that we continue to build on to."
Bermel began the Tiger men's soccer program back in 1982 and served as the first head coach of the Tigers through the 1987 season. During his six-year stint at the helm, Bermel would amass a 61-48-14 overall record while accumulating a 41-17-5 record at the team's first home pitch, Echles Field.
Bartels, the head coach for the Tigers from 1988-98, helped lead the Tigers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1993 behind the program's first conference championship. During his 11-year tenure, Bartels recorded a 110-89-19 record while coaching six All-Region players and 17 All-Conference selections.
"When I think of Memphis soccer, I think of those guys," said head women's soccer coach Brooks Monaghan. "Peter started the Memphis State club team and turned it into a Division I sport, and Chris was able to take it to the next level. If it weren't for those guys, I don't think I'd be in the position I am today and I am forever grateful."
Bermel-Bartels Field will be officially named this Saturday morning with the ceremony beginning at 10 a.m.
