Tigers Continue Winning Ways at ITA Regional
Oct 13, 2023 | Men's Tennis
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Friday was certainly busy, but a successful day for the Memphis men's tennis team at the Champions Club Tennis Complex at Rivermont Park in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Tigers participated in 14 matches during the second day of competition at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional and came away with 10 victories.
Of those wins, eight were in singles competition and sent No. 35 Pablo Alemany, Conor Gannon, and Pau Fanlo into Saturday's round of 16. All three picked up a pair of victories on the day.
"We had another day of solid doubles performances, and I think we are building something there for sure," head coach Chris Doerr said. "In singles I thought we, as a team, really handled moving indoors very well. Big shout out to Conor, Pau and Pablo for winning twice today, which is great knowing how tough our regional is.
"I'm excited to see how we respond tomorrow and I love seeing how much these Tigers love tough competition.
Alemany, the No. 2 overall seed in the singles draw, knocked off East Tennessee State's Lucas Britez 6-1, 6-3 before moving on to beat Vanderbilt's Joubert Klopper 6-3, 6-1 in the third round.
Gannon and Fanlo also won their two respective matches in straight sets. Gannon dispatched Louisville's Russell Lokko 6-4, 6-2 to start the morning and then Middle Tennessee's Igor Berranger 6-2, 6-4 later in the day.
Gannon rolled through ETSU's Pedro Cressoni 6-3, 6-1 and then mowed down Evan Duggal of Louisville 6-4, 6-0.
Juan Zabala picked up a second-round win against ETSU's Alberto Garcia 6-4, 6-1, but then lost to MTSU's Marcel Kamrowski 6-1, 6-3 to end his singles run. Mika Berghaus also had a split day, defeating UT-Chattanooga's Jakub Jupa 6-4, 7-5 before falling in the third round to ETSU's Dimitri Badra 7-5, 6-4.
Sam Reeve and Moritz Kudernatsch each fell in straight sets in round two.
Memphis continued its success in doubles as both Tiger pairs secured victories to advance into the round of 16.
The German duo of Kudernatsch and Berghaus took down Belmont's Ian Cruz and Alfred Wallin by a score of 8-3. They will meet Kamrowski and Ondrej Horak of Middle Tennessee at 9 a.m on Saturday morning.
Alemany and Charlie Barry put up the score of the day in doubles, blasting Butler's Siddhartha Lama and Nicolas Arts, 8-1. They will also take the court at 9 a.m. against a duo from Louisville for a trip to the quarterfinals.
Saturday's round of 16 singles slate sees Gannon take on the tournament's No. 4 seed and No. 119-nationally ranked Nathan Cox of Vanderbilt at 11 a.m. Fanlo will face Dayton's Connor Bruce at the same time.
Five Tigers will also play consolation matches on Saturday. Barry battles Ilya Tiraspolsky of Indiana at 10:30 a.m. in singles. Reeve and Fanlo will take on a Belmont tandem at 4 p.m. in doubles, while Gannon and Zabala will face a duo from host UT-Chattanooga at 4:30 p.m.
