No. 9 Tigers Head to East Carolina, Charlotte for Weekend Road Swing
Oct 10, 2023 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women's soccer team will continue its road trip this week with match ups at East Carolina on Wednesday night and Charlotte on Sunday afternoon.
Memphis (10-1, 4-0 AAC) is riding a seven-game win streak that was extended last week when the Tigers came away with a 2-0 win over Rice. Freshman Anna Hauer led the charge for Memphis with goals in the 23' and 84' of play, earning her AAC Rookie of the Week honors.
"It was a good win and I'm super happy for Anna. When a player scores a couple of goals in a game, you just want that player to gain that much more confidence in themselves," said head coach Brooks Monaghan. "As a true freshman, Anna has done a tremendous job and I hope she really feeds off that into the next game."
Along with Hauer, Mya Jones and Saorla Miller have led the team on the offensive threat with a combined 13 goals and nine assists this season. The duo is currently ranked first in the conference in points per game while Miller leads the league with eight total goals.
Between the pipes, Kaylie Bierman has been a brick wall, making 22 saves in 743 minutes of work while boasting a 0.48 goals-against average. The junior currently holds the top spot in the AAC with her save percentage (0.846) and goals-against average (0.485).
East Carolina (8-2-3, 3-0-1 AAC) is the only other AAC team that still holds an undefeated record in conference play. The Pirates, who are coming off a dominating 4-0 win over Temple, are led behind Sydney Schnell and Jazmin Ferguson's eight goals while Maeve English has been their leading force in goal with 36 saves in over 1,100 minutes of work.
Memphis has had great success over East Carolina in the past, getting wins in three of the last four meetings. Last season, the Tigers had to get through the Pirates twice, once in regular season with a 4-0 win, and another in the first round of the AAC Championship where Mya Jones netted the game-winning goal in the 99' to advance Memphis to the semi-finals.
"East Carolina has put themselves in a very good position being the other team in the league that is undefeated, and they are there for a reason. They are very good at what they do, and we will have to be extremely sharp and at our best to give ourselves the best chance to win," Monaghan added.
Charlotte (5-4-4, 1-1-2 AAC) comes into the week off a loss to Florida Atlantic where the Owls were able to net the game-winning goal in the 89' while 49er's goalkeeper, Emma Wakeman, made five saves in the near perfect match.
For the season, Payton Patrick and Tash Hudson both have four goals recorded while three other Charlotte players have two goals scored. Between the pipes, Wakeman has played all 1,161 minutes with 46 saves recorded.
Sunday's match with Charlotte will be the first meeting between the programs since the 2011 season.
Wednesday's match at East Carolina is scheduled to kick-off at 6 p.m. CT while Sunday's match in Charlotte will start at 12 p.m. CT. Both games can be found on ESPN+.
