MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women's basketball team faces an important week ahead as they take on Houston on Wednesday night and Wichita State on Saturday afternoon.
Memphis (12-9, 4-4 AAC) is coming off a heartbreaking loss to #25 South Florida where the Tigers would erase a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to get within five of the Bulls with less than a minute left in the game. Despite the enormous comeback, two free throws from USF would secure them the 67-62 win.
Jamirah Shutes had herself a day with a team-high 17 points, 13 of which came in the second half, while Madison Griggs and Hannah Riddick added in 14 and 12 points, respectively. Freshman Destiny Thomas continued to make a name for herself as she picked up her second game of 10+ rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive end.
The Tigers have been a big threat to opponents on both sides of the ball this season; Memphis is currently 11-2 when shooting at least 35% from long range and is 7-2 when holding their opponents to under 60 points.
Shutes and Griggs have led the team this season with a combined 27 points per game while Riddick, Thomas and Emani Jefferson have cleaned up on the boards for Memphis this year with nearly 40% of all rebounds coming from the trio.
Houston (8-13, 5-3 AAC) is coming off a historic win after they defeated Tulane 82-36. The Cougars would hold the Green Wave to single digit scoring in three quarters while forcing them into 27 turnovers during the game.
Kamryn Jones, Laila Blair, Bria Patterson and Britney Onyeje all scored in double digits for the Cougars while the team picked up 16 steals.
For the season, Blair and Tiara Young lead the team with 14.3 and 13.1 points per game, respectively, while Tatyana Hill is bringing down just over seven rebounds per game.
Last season when the two teams met, Memphis used a strong defensive fourth quarter to hold Houston to just four points and claim the 57-53 win. Griggs and Jefferson led the team in scoring while the Tigers shot 50% from long range.
Wichita State (13-8, 3-5 AAC) is coming off a 69-50 victory over Cincinnati where Jane Asinde picked up a double-double of 23 points and 14 rebounds for the Shockers. WSU get an explosive third quarter where they pulled away from Cincinnati to the 19-point win.
For the season, Asinde, DJ McCarty and Trajata Colbert lead the team in scoring while Asinde is averaging a double-double with 12 points and nearly 11 rebounds per contest.
Tip-off against Houston is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse while Memphis' game on Saturday is set for a 2 p.m. start time. Coverage of both games can be found on ESPN+ and on 98.9 FM The Roar of Memphis with Tyler Springs on the call.
