Memphis Defeats USF in Five Set Thriller

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis (11-4,1-1) and USF (6-6,0-2) were both looking for their first conference win on Sunday afternoon. Memphis would earn the 3-2 (25-20,16-25,25-21,19-25,15-13) victory after a 2.5 hour match against the Bulls.
Falling into an early hole in the first set, Memphis used a 7-1 scoring run to take the 10-9 advantage over the BUlls. USF and Memphis exchanged kills with the Tigers pulling away to win the set 25-20. USF would dominate in the second, going on a 10-0 run and winning it 25-16.
Memphis was down 14-9 during the third frame but a Bull's error followed by two Tiger kills forced USF to take a timeout, and Memphis followed with a 7-2 run giving them the 19-17 lead. Memphis won the set 25-21 and took 2-1 advantage in the match.
Down by six in the fourth set, Memphis called a timeout and followed it with 5-0 run that included to electric back-to-back kills from Kate Bass forcing the Bulls to take a timeout. USF would pull away to edge out the Tigers 25-21 to force a fifth.
In the final frame, a 5-1 run by the Tigers would be the difference maker. Head coach Sean Burdette had a successful challenge that gave Memphis a match point opportunity that was stopped by the Bulls three times before the winning point.

- Senior Kate Bass led Memphis in blocks for the third straight match with a career-high seven against the Bulls. Bass added nine kills and four digs to her stat line.
- Junior Loren Robertson had a match-high 39 assists and Junior libero Bailey Houlihan had a match-high 21 digs.
- Fifth-year student Miaya Smith had led the Tigers with 14 kills on a .306 hitting percentage.
