Tigers Open AAC Play Against Knights
Sep 14, 2022 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women's soccer team will open up conference play this week as they host the Knights of UCF on Thursday evening.
"We had great results against FAU and Indiana after our road trip the week prior and everything that happened in Memphis last week," said head women's soccer coach Brooks Monaghan. "They responded in a fantastic way against two great opponents."
Memphis (4-3-1) is coming off a shutout weekend where they defeated FAU 3-0 before ending in a tie with Indiana on Sunday afternoon. Kimberley Smit, Eef Kerkhof and Mya Jones all netted goals in Thursday's match against the Owls while goalkeeper Claire Wyvillepicked up her first win of the season while recording two solo shutouts.
As a team, Memphis ranks as one of the top programs in the country in corner kicks per game, scoring offense, total assists, total goals and total points.
UCF (2-2-2) is coming off their second consecutive loss after the Knights fell to North Carolina this past Sunday. While UCF was able to score first, the Tar Heels got goals in the 43' and 58' and held the Knight's offense almost silent in the second half of play.
Kristen Scott and Mallory Olsson lead the Knights in offense this year with three and two goals, respectively, while eight different players have at least one assist recorded.
"UCF is a very talented team and there is a reason they are always at the top of our conference," said Monaghan. "They are very well coached and organized so it's going to be a battle."
Memphis and UCF are no stranger to one another, meeting twice last season. The Tigers took both with the second match-up coming in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Championship. Memphis has won the last five matchups.
Thursday's match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff at the Track & Soccer Complex. Coverage of the game can be found on ESPN+ and on GoTigersGo.com.
