MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Tiger head baseball coach Kerrick Jackson has rounded out his first full-time coaching staff with Julian Henson and Ryan Huber as assistant coaches. Henson and Huber join Tim Jamieson, who was announced as Jackson's pitching coach in June.
Henson, a native of Cordova, Tenn., comes to Memphis with an extensive background in playing and coaching. Henson strung together a successful career at Cordova High School where he was named All-District 14AAA and named to the All-District Tournament Team, selected to the Commercial Appeal's All-Metro Team, earned All-State honors in his junior and senior campaigns and was selected as a "Best of the Preps" finalist for two years.
"We are very excited to add Julian to our coaching staff," said Jackson. "As a true baseball lifer, his knowledge base, passion for teaching and experience make him the perfect fit to help turn Memphis into a championship-caliber program. As a native Memphian, his love for the University and the city will be contagious to every member of our baseball family! Each of the young men will truly benefit from Coach Henson's tutelage."
Following a noteworthy prep career, Henson was drafted in 2005 to the Seattle Mariners. He would spend the next five season with Seattle and the Houston Astros organizations. Henson got the call to AA at just 19 years-old and was part of the 2007 Arizona League (AZL) Championship Team.
As a coach, Henson is a 10-year veteran that has coached two All-SEC Freshmen of the Year players, Kyle Overstreet from Alabama and Jake Mangum from Mississippi State, who is the SEC's all-time hits leader, plus multiple other Division I players and MLB draft picks.
"I am extremely humbled and honored for the opportunity to coach for my alma mater. I'm excited to help build Memphis baseball into a postseason competitor and give Memphians a program to be proud of," said Henson.
Huber joined the University of Memphis baseball program as an assistant coach and camps coordinator in the summer of 2019. Huber will work primarily with the Tigers' infielders.
"After our first conversation, it became very evident that I needed Ryan to stay on board as a member of our coaching staff," said Jackson. "He is well respected in the industry for his work ethic and passion for the game. His attention to detail as a teacher and his demand for excellence from those he coaches, perfectly align with my beliefs and philosophies for our program. Coach Henson will have a huge impact on the new direction of our program, in pursuit of being one of the top programs in the country."
Huber came to Memphis in 2019 after two seasons as an assistant coach at Southwest Tennessee Community College. Huber joined Daron Schoenrock's staff for a second stint after serving as an instructor for the Tigers in 2017. Prior to Memphis, Huber coached the Dulins Dodgers (2014-17) and was also an associate scout for the St. Louis Cardinals.
A Newark, Ohio native, Huber played for Kyle Waters at Newark High School, where he graduated in 2009. Huber continued his playing career at Motlow State Community College from 2010-12 for coach Dan McShea and then at Freed Hardeman University from 2012-13 for coach Jonathan Estes. Huber capped his playing at Bethel University from 2013-14 for coach Rusty Thompson.
While at Freed Hardeman, Huber was named an All-Conference third baseman and received the conference's Gold Glove award. He also made the All-Conference team as a shortstop as a senior at Bethel. In addition, he played for the Licking County Settlers in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League, leading the Settlers to championships both summers and making the All-League team as a third baseman in 2013.
"I am thankful and proud to have the continued opportunity to work with these young men on a daily basis. Paige and I are excited about the future of Memphis baseball and look forward to building champions," said Huber.
