MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women's soccer team will make their way back to South Campus this week when they host Iowa State on Thursday evening.
Memphis (1-1) is coming off a tough 3-0 loss to #18 Ole Miss this past Sunday. The Tigers played the Rebels dead-even in the opening 45 minutes, but the Rebel offense would explode in the second half, getting goals in the 61' and 63' to take a quick 2-0 lead.
"You've got to give credit to Ole Miss. It's always a tough match with them" said Memphis Tiger head women's soccer coach Brooks Monaghan. "I talk about how every play matters and Ole Miss came out and played like every play mattered."
Despite the loss, Memphis would get nine shots off against the Ole Miss defense with six of them being on-goal. Momo Nakao nearly found the back of the net in the 51' when she sent three consecutive shots at Rebel goalkeeper Ashley Orkus, all of which would be saved.
Along with Nakao, Jocelyn Alonzo also got multiple shots off during Sunday's game.
Iowa State (0-1) is coming off their first game of the season against Arizona where they lost on a heartbreaker when a corner kick deflected into the goal off a Cyclone player in the 84' and the Wildcats claimed the 2-1 win.
Jasmine Colbert netted Iowa State's first goal of the season in the 47' off an assist from Emma Mira.
The Tigers have seen great success in recent years against the Cyclones; last season when the two teams met in Ames, Memphis controlled the pace of the game, firing off 20 shots compared to Iowa State's four.
Memphis got the golden goal in the 98' to give the team their fifth consecutive win to open the year to continue their seven-game unbeaten streak from Aug. 19-Sept. 9.
"After getting beat we're always looking forward to the next game and Iowa State is a good team. It was a battle with them last year for over 90 minutes and that's what we are expecting for Thursday," said Monaghan.
Kick-off for Thursday's game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Track & Soccer Complex. Coverage of the game can be found on ESPN+ and on GoTigersGo.com.
