Barlow, Jump Promoted to Associate Head Coaches
Jul 08, 2022 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Following a record-breaking start to their Memphis tenure's, head women's basketball coach Katrina Merriweather has promoted Ashley Barlow and Abby Jump to associate head coaches.
"Today is a special day, and I want to thank our administration for giving me the opportunity to show how valuable these two are to all of us. It is my pleasure to promote both Ashley and Abby to the roles of Associate Head Coaches," said Merriweather.
Barlow, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., helped the Tigers to their first 15-plus win season in nearly a decade and worked predominately with the team's front court and guard play. The former Notre Dame standout has been with Merriweather for the past six years, where the duo has accumulated a 129-59 record and four postseason appearances.
Barlow helped coach a Tiger group that was ranked third in the American Athletic Conference in three-point field goal percentage while holding their opponents to under 29 percent shooting from long range. Both Emani Jefferson and Madison Griggs ranked in the top of the conference in free throw shooting and three-point shooting, respectively.
"Ashley's appointment as Associate Head Coach comes as no surprise to people who know her. She is detailed, committed and takes tremendous pride in her work. There is no question she will be amazing when the time comes for her to run her own program," explained Merriweather. "Ashley has been there every day of my time as a head coach, and her basketball pedigree has given her a wide variety of experiences as she has played for and worked with some of the best coaches in the country."
Jump, a native of Union, Ky., has also served as the team's recruiting coordinator for the past year and has worked with the team's small forwards group. Jump, who played at Wright State before coming back to help coach under Merriweather, has been named to the WBCA's Thirty Under 30 for the past five consecutive years.
In her first season with the Tigers, Jump coached a group that made up nearly 40 percent of the team's scoring and grabbed over a third of the team's rebounds last season. Memphis was ranked in the top-five in the AAC in scoring offense, total rebounds and rebounds per game.
"It is no secret that Abby has worked relentlessly to be one of the top assistant coaches in the country. This promotion is undoubtedly the next step in her career before becoming a Head Coach,' said Merriweather. "Abby's reputation as a recruiter has garnered much attention. However, it is her work ethic that sets her apart from most. She has been extremely loyal to me but also to her commitment to our young women by striving to be her best every day. She has been called many times to join other staffs, and we are thrilled she is here for another season."
"While they are very different, they have helped me become a better coach over the years, and it is imperative that I do my part by ensuring the continuation of their growth and development in this profession."
