Track and Field Ready to Begin Competition at AAC Championships

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis track and field has arrived in Wichita, Kansas and is set to begin events tomorrow for the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The meet will take place over the next three days at Cessna Stadium. This is the second time in three seasons that the Shockers will host the conference championships. Events are slated to kick off tomorrow at 12 p.m., with finals events continuing through Sunday evening; the awards ceremony will follow at 8:05 p.m.
The Tigers have several contenders for titles and medals. Cole Riddle is starting the weekend with a third-place conference ranking in the men's pole vault, following immediately behind two Houston athletes. Riddle places 10th overall in the NCAA with his 5.53m mark from the Memphis Tiger Invitational. Also on the men's side, Iason Machairas holds the top conference spot for shot put, with his top mark coming from April's War Eagle Invitational (18.30m).
Robby Watson checks in for the conference at second in the hammer throw, giving him a top-25 spot overall in the nation. Vitaliy Favorov also ranks second in the conference, but his for the men's javelin throw from his 68.08m mark at the War Eagle Invitational. Adam Yakobi is the final Tiger for the men's side to enter the weekend with a top-three conference ranking; his third-place 400m hurdle time also comes from the War Eagle Invitational.
For the women, several athletes are strong contenders for their respective events, including field competitors DeeNia McMiller, Mona Jaidi, Elina Nebl and Vigdis Jonsdottir. McMiller's conference rankings include second in shot put, sixth in the discus and first in the hammer throw. Her 66.40m hammer throw at the Crimson Tide Invitational shattered school and conference records and ranks her among the top-20 in the nation. Jaidi also has multiple strong conference rankings: sixth in shot put, fourth in the discus throw, fourth in the hammer and first in javelin (15th overall in NCAA).
Nebl also has a top-five ranking in the women's javelin with her 45.43m top mark at the War Eagle Invitational, and Jonsdottir sits at third in the conference for the hammer with a 63.06m top throw.
"I am excited to see us step up and compete at our best," said head coach Kevin Robinson. "We definitely have multiple individual championship opportunities. Preparation has been solid and the weather looks good, so we just have to execute and stay composed."
