Track and Field Finishes Strong at Joey Haines Invitational

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis track and field finished up competition Saturday at the Joey Haines Invitational with 19 top-five finishes.
The meet, hosted by Southeast Missouri State University, was held at the Abe Stuber Track Complex Friday and Saturday.
The women's throws group brought home two titles with Liza Lap placing first in the discus throw (54.83m) and Mona Jaidi in the javelin (51.98m); these performances gained them first-place conference rankings for each event. DeeNia McMiller grabbed a top-five spot in the shot put, discus and hammer and is now ranked in the top ten in the conference for all three events.
On the men's side, Robert Watson finished second with a top hammer throw of 66.31m, and Vitaliy Favorov also brought home a silver for his 65.08m javelin throw. This places each of them at second in the conference for the respective events.
In addition to competition in Cape Girardeau, some distance athletes headed to the Washington University Distance Carnival in St. Louis, where several posted personal bests. Chloe Figgins' and Solstice Saliba's records landed them top-10 spots in the women's 10k (second and sixth, respectively). Liam Walsh rounded out the top five for the men's 3000m steeplechase placing fifth at 9:19.48.
Next weekend, the Tigers will travel back to Oxford, Miss., for the Joe Walker Invitational beginning Friday. Events are scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. and continue through Saturday.
