Tigers Earn At-Large Bid to 2022 NCAA Tournament
Mar 13, 2022 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. ā The Memphis Tigers are seeded ninth in the West Region in the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship and will match up with eighth-seeded Boise State in the first round Thursday at Moda Center in Portland, Ore. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:45 p.m. CT on TNT.
Ā
The Tigers (21-10) earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and are making their first appearance in the Big Dance since 2014.
Ā
Memphis and Boise State, winners of both the Mountain West Conference regular season and tournament titles, matched up last season in the National Invitation Tournament. The Tigers won the quarterfinal matchup en route to the NIT title, 59-56. The Broncos return three starters and 12 letterwinners from last year's squad.
Ā
The Tigers enter the tournament winners of 12 of their last 14 games. In a tale of two halves of the season, Memphis had a 9-8 record on Jan. 20 before its end-of-season surge, which included two wins over nationally-ranked Houston. The Tigers' win at No. 6/7 Houston Feb. 12 was its first over a top-10 opponent on the road since 2005, and the Tigers have defeated three ranked teams, two in the top-10, in the same season for the first time since 2013-14.
Ā
Memphis won 13 American Athletic Conference games during the season, its most since joining the AAC prior to the 2013-14 campaign.
