Tigers Close out Regular Season at Home Against ECU
Mar 01, 2022 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn.– The Memphis women's basketball team will wrap up regular season play this Wednesday night when they play host to the Pirates of East Carolina. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
Memphis (14-11, 5-9 AAC) is coming off a 71-58 loss to Cincinnati that saw the Tigers fight back from as much as an 11-point deficit in the first half. While Memphis was able to cut the Bearcats lead to just one in the third quarter, the Cincinnati offense shot lights out and handed the Tigers the loss.
Alana Davis led the team with 12 points and nine rebounds while Emani Jefferson also chipped in 12 points, 10 of which came from the free throw line. As a team, Memphis recorded 40 rebounds, 22 of them coming on the offensive end and marking the first time this season that the team has recorded more offensive rebounds than defensive.
For the season, Jamirah Shutes leads the team with 11.4 points per game while Jefferson is adding in 10.0 points. Fifth year senior Tyler Frierson has been cleaning up the boards for the Tigers with 6.0 rebounds per contest while Davis and Lanetta Williams are grabbing a combined 9.8 per game.
ECU (11-16, 4-10 AAC) is coming off a close fought game with South Florida this past weekend. The Pirates stayed within reaching distance of the Bulls and even took the lead for a stretch of time in the second quarter. But, nine made free throws from South Florida would threaten the Pirates comeback and they suffered the 68-60 loss.
For the season, Taniyah Thompson leads the team and the AAC in scoring at 18.7 points per game and is second on the team with 4.4 rebounds. Tylar Bennett is leading the Pirates at 4.9 rebounds per game while Alexsia Rose has dished out a team-best 105 assists.
The Tigers and Pirates met just two and a half weeks ago when Memphis made the trip to Greenville on the first leg of a five-day trip. Unfortunately, it did not go in the Tiger's favor; they were held to just 14 first half points and 38 total points for the game and faced the 68-38 loss.
Coverage for Wednesday's game can be found on ESPN+ and on News Talk 98.9 The Roar of Memphis with Tyler Springs on the call.
Following Wednesday's game, the Tigers will begin prepping for the American Athletic Conference Championship at Dickie's Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. Seeding, game times and opponents will be available following the conclusion of regular season play.
