Feb 09, 2022 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn.– The Memphis women's basketball team is back in action on Thursday when they play host to the Green Wave of Tulane University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
The Tigers (13-7, 4-5 AAC) are coming off a heartbreaking loss to the Knights of UCF. Despite facing the 71-57 loss, Memphis found themselves down just seven with a minute left in the game after fighting back from as much as a 14-point deficit.
Alana Davis and Madison Griggs led the team with 16 and 14 points, respectively, while Emani Jefferson nearly missed a double-double with nine points and a team-high nine rebounds.
For the season, Jamirah Shutes is leading the team with 11.9 points per game while Jefferson is not far behind her with 9.5 points per contest. Post player duo Tyler Frierson and Lanetta Williams have been the clean-up crew on the boards for Memphis with a combined 11 rebounds per game while five total Tiger players are averaging four or more rebounds.
As a team, Memphis is holding their opponents to under 30% shooting from beyond the arc and is outrebounding teams by more than five boards per game. They rank as one of the best three-point shooting teams in the American Athletic Conference at 31.8% for the season and 106 total three-point field goals made.
Tulane (14-7, 5-4 AAC) extended their winning streak to three after taking down the Bulls of South Florida this past Sunday afternoon. The Green Wave used a slow first quarter from the Bulls offense to their advantage and never sacrificed that lead. Tulane would control the game and end up with the 67-55 victory.
Moon Ursin led the way for Tulane with 18 points, eight of which came from the free throw line, while Dynah Jones and Krystal Freeman added in 13 and 11 points, respectively. Freeman also notched a double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds.
For the season, Ursin leads the team in points, rebounds and assists with 14.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and 73 total assists. Jones, Freeman and Arsula Clark are all also averaging double figures in scoring.
The Tigers and Green Wave met earlier this season in New Orleans where the Tigers opened with a 27-point first quarter. But fouls would threaten Memphis' lead as the Green Wave went to the free throw line 33 times during the contest. Despite draining 12 three-pointers and going 16- 19 from the free throw line, Memphis was not able to get back Tulane and suffered the 81-74 loss.
Emani Jefferson led the way for the Tigers with 17 points while Jamirah Shutes, Madison Griggs and Alana Davis all scored in double figures. Tyler Frierson led the team with eight rebounds during the game.
Thursday's game will have coverage on ESPN+ and on News Talk 98.9 The Roar of Memphis with Tyler Springs on the call.
