Tigers Look to Sweep Series with Cincinnati Wednesday Night

MEMPHIS, Tenn.– The Memphis women's basketball team will make their final regular season road trip this week as they make their way to Cincinnati to tangle with the Bearcats on Wednesday evening.
The Tigers (14-10, 5-8 AAC) are coming off a heartbreaking loss to Wichita State; after finding themselves down by as much as nine in the first quarter, Memphis would rally for a 16-0 run through the end of the first and beginning of the second quarter to take a 23-16 lead.
But turnovers would threaten Memphis' lead late in the game and the Tigers ended up suffering the 68-61 loss.
Emani Jefferson, Madison Griggs and Jamirah Shutes would all score in double figures, accounting for 40 of the team's 61 points, while Tyler Frierson pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
For the season, Shutes leads the team with 11.6 points per game while Frierson and Lanetta Williams have been the go-to's on the boards with 259 combined rebounds. As a team, Memphis has been hot from the three-point line, ringing up an AAC-second best 31.7% from beyond the arc while also sinking a conference second best 326 free throws.
Cincinnati (10-15, 3-10 AAC) is coming off a 68-57 loss to the Pirates of East Carolina where they were held to just six points in the opening quarter. While the Bearcats would rally back from a double-digit deficit, they would not be able to make up from the first quarter shortage and suffer the 11-point loss.
For the season, Jillian Hayes and Akira Levy lead the team with a combined 23.1 points per contest while Hayes is dominating the boards for Cincinnati with 173 total rebounds. As a team, Cincinnati ranks as the best shot-blocking team in the AAC with 5.0 blocks/game while also ranking as the second-best team with 361 assists.
The Tigers and Bearcats met earlier this month where Memphis came away with the 66-54 win. After taking a commanding 20-12 lead in the first quarter, the Tigers would control the rest of the game and cruise to the team's first victory over the Bearcats inside the Fieldhouse since the 2015-16 season.
Memphis held Cincinnati to just six points and 22% shooting from the field in the final 10 minutes of play. Nine different Tiger players scored in the game while Emani Jefferson and Jamirah Shutes led the team with 15 and 14 points, respectively. Lanetta Williamswas a force on the boards with game-high nine rebounds.
Coverage of Wednesday night's game can be found on ESPN+ and on News Talk 98.9 The Roar of Memphis with Tyler Springs on the call. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.
