Home Runs Prove Costly in 10-8 Loss to Valparaiso
Feb 20, 2022 | Baseball
Memphis: 8, Valparaiso: 10
How it happened:
- Memphis struck early against LHP Jake Miller, (W, 1-0), as SS Ben Brooks connected on his first home run of the season, a two-run blast in the first inning
- The Beacons quickly got back in the game, as they plated a pair of runs on four hits in the second frame against RHP Carson Stinnett (L, 0-1), while a home run by 3B Kaleb Hannahs to lead off the third put Valparaiso in front
- After both starters settled in, the Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, as three straight batters reached with two outs and 1B Jacob Compton leveled the game 3-3 with an RBI single, one of his three hits on the day
- Valparaiso responded immediately against Stinnett and RHP Jackson Lyons in the sixth, as the Beacons sent 10 men to the plate in a six-run frame
- Stinnett allowed four runs on eight hits over five innings, while Lyons allowed five runs, two earned, on three hits in just 0.2 innings
- 1B Taylor Howell led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run for Memphis, while CF Zach Wilson pulled the Tigers within four with a two-out RBI double in the eighth
- After the Beacons added an insurance run in the ninth, the Tigers got the tying man into the on-deck circle in their last at-bat courtesy of another solo home run from Howell and a two-run home run from LF Ian Bibiloni, but RHP Bobby Nowak (SV, 1) retired Wilson to secure Valparaiso's 10-8 victory
Notables:
- Taylor Howell recorded his second career multi-home run game
- Jacob Compton had a team-high three hits, his second consecutive multi-hit performance and third straight game with at least one hit
Up Next:
- The Tigers will host Central Arkansas Tuesday at 4 p.m. at FedExPark Avron Fogelman Field
- Next weekend, Memphis will welcome the Brown Bears to town for a three-game set
