Tigers Late Push Spoiled by Tulane Early Offense
Feb 10, 2022 | Women's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn.– Looking for their fourth consecutive home victory, Memphis welcome in the Green Wave of Tulane University. While the Tigers got a game-changing offensive push in the final seconds of the game, it would not be enough to claim the win and suffered the 76-74 loss.
Following tonight's game, Memphis moves to 13-8 overall and 4-6 in AAC play.
Back and forth scoring in the opening quarter kept it close, neither team getting more than five points ahead of the other.
The Tigers found themselves on the losing end of the five-point deficit with less than four minutes in the quarter. Memphis' offense would finish out with an 11-5 run that was capped off with a second chance lay-up from Hannah Riddick and a three-pointer from Alana Davisto take the 16-14 lead.
Tulane took control in the second quarter thanks in part to 27 points from their offense. After Memphis extended their lead out to six, Krystal Freeman went on a scoring spree, scoring 13 of her game-high 28 points to put the Green Wave up 41-33 going into halftime.
Though down by as much as 11, Memphis chipped away at Tulane's lead bit by bit.
A three-pointer from Jamirah Shutes midway through the third quarter put Memphis down four. Shutes would add in six more points along with buckets with Jatyjia Jones and Emani Jefferson to put Memphis down 54-51 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
Memphis found themselves down double-digits once again with five minutes remaining in the game – but that didn't stop them from folding. After slowly chipping away at Tulane's lead once again, it all came down to the final seconds of the game.
After Jones drained a three-pointer on the far wing, Jones would force a Tulane turnover at mid-court and find an open Maya Stovall on the opposite wing for the Tiger's second three-pointer in a matter of 13 seconds. After the Green Wave called a timeout to advance the ball, Dynah Jones sank a three-pointer to put Tulane up 76-71 with 13 remaining.
Memphis would come down the floor and send Shutes to the free throw line. While she made the first one, Emani Jefferson would add in a short jump shot at the buzzer to make the final score 76-74 and hand the Tigers their first home loss since January 8.
Alana Davis led the way for the Tigers tonight with 18 points, eight of which coming from the free throw line, while Emani Jeffersonand Jamirah Shutes added in 15 and 12 points, respectively. The post trio of Davis, Lanetta Williams and Tyler Frierson all pulled down six rebounds.
Memphis will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to East Carolina to take on the Pirates. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT. The Tigers will then make their way to Dallas to match-up with SMU for the second time this season.
