MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers made a statement on national television after running away with a 68-57 victory over rival Ole Miss in front of 13,264 raucous fans Saturday night in a "White Out" at FedExForum.
Memphis (6-2) extended a four-game win streak in emphatic fashion and picked up its second win over a Southeastern Conference team this season. The victory was also the fourth over a power conference program.
Three Tigers were in double figures, led by DeAndre Williams who was under a triple-double watch for most of the night. The fifth-year forward finished with 17 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists in 35 minutes. He also added three blocks to lead the defensive effort.
Senior Alex Lomax made energizing play after play all night to the tune of 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting with a game-high four steals, two rebounds and two assists. Point guard Kendric Davis also totaled 14 points.
For the most part, Memphis played a well-rounded game despite shooting just 1-of-15 from three-point range. The Tigers connected on 39.1 percent from the field (27-69) and made 81.3 percent of their free throws (13-16). They dished out 11 assists, swiped seven steals and swatted five shots.
The Tigers used runs of 7-0, 8-1 and 9-0 to take control of the game in the first half and build a 30-8 advantage at the 7:41-mark.
The offense was running through Williams early and often as the big man racked up all seven of his assists by the 3-minute mark of the opening period en route to building a 36-22 lead at the break.
Ole Miss (6-2) pulled to within 10 in the first three minutes of the second half, but seven straight points from Williams and Davis stretched the Tigers' lead back out.
Memphis found some shooting woes in the second half, going just 11-of-35 (31.4%) overall, but its defensive prowess kept the Rebels at bay as the Tigers controlled the game the rest of the way.
